Early Season
Early Season Ski Chalets
Early season skiing is for the keen. The skiers who watch the first snowfall reports in October, who know which resorts open earliest, and who would rather be on a half-open mountain in November than waiting until February. If that describes you, early season offers something no other period can: the Alps at their quietest, their cheapest, and -- when the snow arrives early -- their most exhilarating.
The trade-off is honest: not all lifts will be running, not all runs will be open, and lower resorts may have patchy coverage. Village services are quieter too -- some restaurants and shops do not open until mid-December. But at the right resort, none of this matters. A glacier resort like Zermatt offers world-class skiing from October onwards. Val Thorens, at 2,300m, typically opens with substantial terrain in late November. And the experience of skiing fresh corduroy on an empty piste, with no lift queues and the mountain largely to yourself, is worth every compromise.
Early season also suits a particular type of trip. Couples and small groups of friends who want to combine skiing with a relaxed mountain break. Remote workers who can ski in the morning and work in the afternoon. Experienced skiers shaking off the summer rust before the season proper. The chalets are the same -- the prices are not.

When to book and what to budget
Key Dates
Early Season 2026/27
The earliest Alpine resorts open in late October (Zermatt's glacier, Hintertux), with the main season beginning in late November. Val Thorens typically opens in the last week of November, followed by most major resorts in early to mid-December. Full resort operations -- all lifts, all runs, full village services -- usually begin around 15-20 December.
Booking Window
How far ahead to book
Two to four months ahead is usually sufficient. Early season is the least competitive booking period of the winter, and even popular chalets often have availability at shorter notice. That said, the best-value properties in resorts like Val Thorens do get picked up by regular early-season visitors, so booking by September gives you the widest choice.
Budget
What to expect on pricing
Early season offers the lowest prices of the winter -- typically 50-70% less than Christmas week for the same property. A luxury chalet that commands £10,000 at Christmas may be available for £3,000-£5,000 in late November or early December. Self-catered properties can drop below £2,000 per week. The value is exceptional if you can travel outside school holidays.
Our Picks
Best resorts for early season skiing
Val Thorens
First to open in France, 2,300m altitude, Three Valleys
The first major French resort to open each season, typically in the last week of November. At 2,300m, Val Thorens has the altitude to guarantee early snow, and the Three Valleys lift company invests heavily in early-season snowmaking. By early December, expect 60-80% of the local terrain to be open, with Three Valleys links following as other resorts open.
View resortZermatt
Year-round glacier skiing, most open terrain in early season
The only major resort in the Alps that genuinely offers year-round skiing. The Klein Matterhorn glacier (3,883m) provides reliable terrain from October, and as the season builds through November and December, lower runs progressively open. By early December, Zermatt typically offers more open terrain than any other resort in the Alps.
View resortCervinia
Shared Zermatt glacier, Italian value, early opener
Cervinia shares the same glacier system as Zermatt from the Italian side, offering access to the Plateau Rosa at 3,480m. The advantage of Cervinia is value -- Italian resort prices are significantly lower than Swiss, with cheaper lift passes, dining, and accommodation. The shared ski area means the same early-season glacier terrain at a fraction of the cost.
View resortKitzbühel
Early Austrian opener, medieval town, strong snowmaking
Kitzbühel is among the earliest Austrian resorts to open, typically in late October or early November, thanks to heavy investment in snowmaking on the Resterhöhe and Hahnenkamm sectors. The medieval town centre provides more early-season atmosphere and dining options than purpose-built resorts, making it an excellent choice for a November or early December trip that does not feel like an off-season compromise.

Amenities that matter at early season
Fireplace
November and December evenings are long and cold. A real fire is not a luxury in early season -- it is the centrepiece of the chalet experience when darkness falls at 4:30pm and the temperature drops well below freezing.
Hot tub
The classic ski chalet essential, and particularly welcome in early season when you may be skiing in colder conditions with fewer people to share the mountain. A hot tub on the terrace after a day of first tracks is hard to beat.
Proximity to lifts
Early season means fewer lifts running and potentially limited connections between sectors. Being close to a main lift station gives you the most efficient access to whatever terrain is open, without relying on shuttle buses or linked lifts that may not yet be operational.
Well-equipped kitchen
Not all resort restaurants open before mid-December. A well-equipped kitchen -- quality cookware, a good oven, a dishwasher -- means you are self-sufficient if dining options are limited, without the inconvenience of a poorly appointed kitchenette.
Good WiFi
Early season attracts remote workers who combine skiing with work -- mornings on the mountain, afternoons at a laptop. Reliable, fast WiFi is not a nice-to-have for this audience; it is a booking requirement.
Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Which resorts open earliest in the Alps?
Zermatt and Hintertux (Austria) offer year-round glacier skiing. For the main season, Kitzbühel and Solden typically open in late October or early November. Val Thorens and Cervinia usually follow in late November. Most major resorts are operational by mid-December, though full terrain may not open until late December depending on snowfall.
How much terrain is typically open in early season?
It varies enormously by resort and snowfall. Glacier resorts like Zermatt may have 50-100km of runs from November. Val Thorens typically opens with 40-60% of its local terrain. Purpose-built resorts at lower altitudes may only have a handful of runs served by snowmaking. The safest bet is to choose altitude (above 2,000m) or glacier access.
How much cheaper is early season compared to peak weeks?
Dramatically. Early season is typically 50-70% less than Christmas week. A luxury chalet costing £10,000-£15,000 at Christmas may be £3,000-£5,000 in late November. Lift passes are often discounted too, and some resorts offer early-season package deals. It is the best-value period of the entire ski season.
Are resort services fully operational in early season?
Not always. Some restaurants, shops, and services do not open until mid-December. Ski schools are typically running but with fewer class options. Glacier resorts like Zermatt are more fully operational year-round. Purpose-built resorts like Val Thorens tend to have core services running from opening day. Check individual resort websites for specific opening schedules.
Is early season good for beginners?
It can be, with caveats. Ski school classes are small and slopes are empty, which suits learners. However, limited terrain means fewer easy green and blue runs may be open. Glacier resorts often have excellent beginner areas at altitude. The cold and shorter days can also be challenging for complete beginners. For a first ski trip, February or Easter may be a safer choice.
What should I expect from the weather in November and early December?
Cold. Expect daytime temperatures between -5°C and -15°C at altitude, with shorter daylight hours (sunrise around 7:30am, sunset around 4:30pm). Snowfall can be heavy -- November and December are among the snowiest months in the Alps -- but you may also encounter periods of cold, clear weather with limited natural snow. Dress warmly and embrace the quieter, more intimate mountain atmosphere.
